Truck tires are one of the most important components of the vehicle. Since they are the only point of attachment to the ground, they represent the safety factor of both the vehicle and its occupants. Its performance and durability are guaranteed when the correct use occurs.
In addition to safety, one of the main concerns of the companies that use the truck to provide their services is the minimization of costs, and it is therefore imperative to adopt some behavior regarding the maintenance of truck tires.
At CARPNEU we recommend that you follow the following behaviors to increase the longevity of truck tires, improve their performance and maintain vehicle occupant safety:
1- Be careful when choosing the brand of truck tires
There are several brands of truck tires on the market, some of them with very attractive prices but that leave to be desired in terms of safety and performance, especially in wet conditions.
At CARPNEU, we recommend the purchase of tires manufactured within the European Union, as they comply with safety standards, which have been tested numerous times before being marketed. We have listed some of them: Continental, Michelin, Goodyear, Dunlop, Pirelli, Bridgestone.
2- Conduct a regular alignment
The steering alignment allows you to adjust the steering and suspension angles of the vehicle, permitting the wheels to be placed perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other.
By regularly aligning the truck, uneven tire wear is avoided so that it is not replaced early.
With normal driving conditions (speed, load, floor), CARPNEU recommends a road alignment every 20.000 km.
3- Check the pressure of the truck tires before starting any travel
High or low tire pressure causes excessive wear and can lead to other vehicle anomalies or even increased fuel consumption.
In this way, the tire pressures recommended by the manufacturer must be followed and must be adapted to the load of the truck.
4- Rotate the tires
Long journeys, which also require higher speed, and heavy loads contribute to greater wear of tires, which often occur irregularly.
The rotation of the tires consists of the transposition of the tires from the left side to the right side, and vice versa. This behavior allows a more even and uniform truck tire tread wear, as well as prolong the tire life, reducing costs.
CARPNEU experts recommend rotating truck tires at a maximum of 50.000 km in 50.000 km.
5- Distributing the load of the truck by the wheels
The different truck tires are designed to carry a specific load, just as it is necessary to acquire tires considering the load index, it is equally essential to distribute the load of the truck by the wheels, even if the load is low. An uneven load distribution on the truck can reduce tire life by about 55%.
6- Check the tire tread state
For safety reasons of the vehicle and its occupants, legally and according to Regulatory Decree no. 7/98, article no. 6, the floor of tires of cars with a gross weight of more than 3500kg must have a minimum of 1.0mm in all the circumference of the scroll zone, although CARPNEU recommends replacement at 2.00mm for safety reasons. For this reason, it is advisable to check the condition of the tires on a regular basis, preventing accidents and / or fines.
